African Diaspora Celebration
Presented by the African Student Association (ASA)
For this year's Wazobia, The executive board members of the African Student Association decided to make the theme "Ubukumkani"(Ubu-Kum-Ka-Ni): Once and Always a Royal. "Ubukumkani" originates from the South African language, Xhosa (Ko-sa) which means Royalty. This year's theme is a celebration and honoring of both past and present African royalty. We chose this theme to give a voice to past African royalty and regimes which have been lost due to colonization and westernization as well as to celebrate current royalties which still exist and hold on to their traditional African histories and heritage. We believe it is necessary to not only highlight the growth and transitioning of African heritage and royalty over the years but also old royalties that paved the way for new royal heritages. So when you hear "UBUKUMKANI", you respond with "ONCE AND ALWAYS A ROYAL" as a reminder that we all come from royalty in some way, shape, or form and we don't always need a crown or title to claim it because it is embedded in our heritage and history.
