Undergraduate Admission Information

Ãå±±ÂÖ¼éhas a really unique Writing department. We are one of the only stand alone creative writing departments for undergraduates in the country. In other words, we are independent and autonomous, not a program in a Communication department or an English department. This translates to a different curriculum and different faculty than we would have if we were under another the umbrella of another department.  We have an unusual breadth of courses from poetry, fiction, reviewing, writing about film, science writing, writing about art, environmental writing, travel writing, rhetoric, style, nonfiction prose and more. A student can fashion an Interdisciplinary major with another discipline. For example, a student might take half their upper division courses in Communication and half in Writing or half in Philosophy and half in Writing. The Interdisciplinary major allows a student to split their upper division course work between two disciplines. Other options include a complete Writing major with a minor in art history and studio art.

Requirements for the Writing Major

  • or
  • Seven 300- or 400-level electives (exclusive of )
  • Senior Seminar: New Writers ()

Requirements for the Interdisciplinary Writing Major

  • or
  • Three WR 300- or 400-level courses
  • Five (usually) upper-level courses in another discipline (e.g., English, art, history, modern languages, philosophy, political science, etc.)

The curriculum at Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é requires a minimum of 38, three-, four-, or five-credit courses and at least 120 credits for an undergraduate degree. Some majors may require additional courses/credits. The residency requirement includes the satisfactory completion of at least 60 of these credits at Loyola. The curriculum is comprised of three areas: the core, the major, and the electives.
