Meet Melissa Cruz Noriega, a CREST scholar pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Secondary Education with a focus on Biology at Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é. Melissa is set to graduate in Spring of 2025. Here’s a closer look at her journey and aspirations.

Interest in the CREST Scholars Program

Melissa's interest in the CREST Scholars program stems from its powerful mission. This full-ride opportunity is not just about financial support.

"It embodies a commitment to community-oriented, mentorship-based, and scaffolded education for aspiring teachers, " says Melissa. Introduced to the program by Professor Stacy Williams, the Department Chair of Teacher Education, during her sophomore year of undergrad, Melissa was immediately captivated by its objectives.

The CREST program aims to address the critical shortage of Math and Science educators. It emphasizes the importance of community and support among scholars, creating a network where future teachers can learn from one another. With passionate leaders like Stacy Williams and Tim Clark guiding the program, Melissa felt assured of receiving dedicated support throughout her educational journey.

A Passion for Education

Melissa’s path to becoming an aspiring science educator is unique. As a child, she struggled with Math and Science, finding these subjects challenging. However, the influence of passionate teachers transformed her perspective. Their enthusiasm ignited a desire to give back to the community.

"I believe everyone should have a right and accessibility to a quality, equitable, and appropriate education," she shares.

Anticipation for Program Experiences

Melissa is particularly excited about the internship and the CREST seminars. These experiences will allow her to collaborate with fellow educators and adult learners, facilitating a rich exchange of ideas and strategies. She believes that these opportunities will equip her with the necessary tools and knowledge to excel as a future educator. Engaging with the Baltimore County Public Schools community will enable her to apply her learning in real-world classroom settings.

Impacting Future Student Populations

The experiences gained from the CREST program will empower Melissa to better serve her future students. She is committed to providing a solid education that transforms lives, believing that every student should have access to the resources and support needed for success. Being part of a community of educators will allow her to continually learn, receive feedback, and improve her teaching practices, ultimately benefiting her future students.

Future Aspirations

After completing the program, Melissa plans to return to Puerto Rico to contribute to the educational landscape there. With the declining number of educators posing significant challenges, she hopes to make a positive impact by offering her insights and experiences gained from the CREST program. Her mission is to provide students with the opportunities and encouragement they need to thrive in their education.

Involvement Beyond Academics

Outside of her studies, Melissa actively participates in various clubs and activities at Loyola, including Crochet for a Cause, Baking Club, and Pre-Health Society. She also volunteers with the Center for Community, Service, and Justice (CCSJ), where she has served as an ESL teacher’s assistant and participated in community beautification projects. These experiences have enriched her time at Ãå±±ÂÖ¼éand reinforced her commitment to community service.

Melissa’s journey as a CREST Scholar reflects her dedication to education and community. With a strong desire to inspire the next generation of leaders, advocates, and innovators, she is well on her way to making a significant impact in the field of education.
