Meet the CREST Scholars: Ada Marcovitz
We鈥檙e excited to introduce Ada Marcovitz, one of our new CREST Scholars at Loyola University. The CREST program supports tuition, books, fees, and licensure exams for MAT students. Ada is currently pursuing her Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in secondary math education and is set to graduate in May 2025. Here鈥檚 a closer look at her journey and aspirations.
Why Loyola鈥檚 CREST Scholars Program?
Ada was drawn to Loyola鈥檚 CREST Scholars Program because it offered the ideal balance of personalized support and rigorous academic training. 鈥淚 wanted a one-year program where I could engage deeply with my peers and benefit from a robust student teaching experience,鈥� she explains. Ada was also impressed by Loyola鈥檚 commitment to cura personalis (care for the whole person) and its emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion. The program鈥檚 support in the face of the current teacher shortage, including covering full tuition for MAT candidates, was another key factor in her decision. Ada is particularly excited about the learning opportunities that come from being part of a small cohort and participating in CREST seminars.
A Passion for Math Education
Ada鈥檚 passion for math has been evident since childhood. 鈥淢ath was always one of my favorite subjects, and I enjoyed helping my peers overcome their challenges,鈥� she shares. Her goal is to make math accessible and relatable to all students, helping them build confidence and succeed in a subject that many find daunting. 鈥淚 see the world through a mathematical lens and want to share that perspective with my students,鈥� Ada adds.
Anticipation for the CREST Program
In the CREST Program, Ada is most excited about exploring culturally responsive teaching strategies. 鈥淚鈥檓 looking forward to learning how to connect with all my students and create a classroom environment that celebrates their diverse backgrounds,鈥� she says. Ada also values the opportunity to learn and grow with her fellow MAT candidates.
Impact on Future Students
Ada believes that the CREST program鈥檚 focus on culturally responsive pedagogy will greatly benefit her future students. 鈥淐reating a safe and inclusive classroom where students can thrive involves recognizing and celebrating cultural differences,鈥� she explains. Ada is committed to integrating these principles into her teaching to foster an environment where every student feels valued and empowered.
Looking Ahead
Though Ada is still new to the MAT program, she has clear ambitions for her future. She looks forward to her student teaching internship as a chance to experience both middle and high school settings. While her exact path is still unfolding, Ada is certain she will be teaching math in a high-need middle or high school after graduation.
Hobbies and Extracurriculars
Outside of her academic pursuits, Ada has a range of interests. She loves solving logic puzzles such as sudoku, star battle, and nonograms, as well as tackling jigsaw puzzles. Ada is also a passionate cook, especially when it comes to vegan cuisine. One of her favorite creations is a fruit tart with a shortbread crust and vegan pastry cream.
